| | Rank: | Chief | | Years of Service: | 29.50 years | | Profession: | Battalion Chief | | Job Training: | Incident Safety Officer EMT-B/C/D ITAC MCTO Wildland FF - 1 NIMS - 100, 200, 300, 700,800 Hazmat - Operations Swiftwater Rescue - Operations Telecommunicator I Telecommunicator II | | | | | My name is Ken Shipman. I joined the Fire Department in March of 1981 while a senior in high school. During my years with the department I held the titles of Firefighter, Captain, Training Officer, Zone Chief and I am now currently the Chief of the Department. I attended Granger Schools graduating in 1981 then attended Technical Schools and College for several years after, obtaining a degree in Electronics engineering. In 1985 I started work as an technical engineer for Merv Griffin enterprises. The job required much travel but I was able to maintain my qualifications as a firefighter through 13 years In 1996 I met then married Donna. In 1999 I started full time employment with Yakima County Fire District 5 as a Captain and now hold the position of Battalion Chief. I have four children Lisa, Angie, Kaleigh pronounced Kali and Andrew. I enjoy serving the public and really enjoy being able to make a difference in peoples' lives. Nothing is more satisfying than bringing a person back to life or saving their house or property from a destructive fire. The positive parts of the job keep me going between the death and destruction that firefighters must face. My stress relievers include time with my family, travel, spending time in big cities, seeing new sights and piloting airplanes. | | | | | Click here to contact Ken Shipman via email |
